Anonymous asked: 'Somewhere Along The Line', while certainly not a standout song, is interesting to note as a statement of Billy Joel's personal view of life which is expressed in many of his songs right up to his last album. Although he doesn't want to be a pessimist, he admits that he is one. He is always waiting for the other shoe to drop and expecting something bad to happen after something good happens. The songs 'Souvenir' and 'The Entertainer from his next album 'Streetlife Serenade' echo this same motif.

I have noticed this string of pessimism and I wonder if he still feels this way today. It’s a fatalistic way to go through life which is a kind of thinking I try to avoid. This probably figures into my opinions of the songs to some degree even though I’ve tried my best to immerse myself in the Joel universe.
